What matters is coupling stiffness, surface contact, and clamping force. A masterfully built bolt-on will outperform a sloppy set-neck every day of the week. A tight neck-through will behave nearly identically to a tight set-neck. The joint type is a manufacturing decision, not an acoustic one.

At VRC Guitars, we’ve chosen Stringjoy 9.5–46 strings as the house set on every guitar we build. We like the balance they provide between comfort, tuning stability, and responsiveness, while their tension profile gives the strings a consistent feel across the fretboard. When I set out making electric guitars, I was not planning on launching a new boutique electric guitar brand. The journey progressed very quickly from hobby to custom builds, to a boutique brand with several models. An early decision was helped by Lollar Pickups. With the Monolith pickup in hand, I could start prototyping everything around it.

One of the easiest decisions we had to make is how we were going to get our wiring and controls produced - partner with Obsidian Wire as our OEM.
