Why Obsidian Wire is our OEM for Electronics

At VRC Guitars, our goal is to produce boutique level, high-quality electric guitars. We produce in small batches and repeatability is a requirement, not just a goal. As you will see throughout our web site, we decided early on that we are not going to chase the traditional builds. There are already plenty of really good companies producing those instruments. We went down a different path - modern, clean, precision engineering. One of the easiest decisions we had to make is how we were going to get our wiring and controls produced - partner with Obsidian Wire as our OEM.

Obsidian Wire already produces some of the best wiring and controls in the world using carefully designed circuits, custom pots by CTS, prowired PureTone (tm) jacks, and polyester film capacitors. All components are carefully selected and professionally mounted on printed circuit boards (PCB) to eliminate fragile solder joints and the rat's nest of wires we typically see when opening a control cavity. It's clean, it's precise, and it's durable. These components easily earned their place in our system.

As an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), Obsidian Wire worked with us to understand our needs and our pickups. The result is custom controls designed just for VRC Guitars to work with the unique properties and qualities of each of our pickups. The result is increased clarity and range, and increased tonal variety. When you pull the push/pull knob on the FORGED, it results in a perfect, usable, and unique single coil tone; not just a quieter version of the humbucker. We learned early on that this is incredibly important. Splitting a high output bridge humbucker like the Lollar Monolith is very different than splitting a lower output neck pickup like the Bare Knuckle Halcyon. They can both sound incredible, but they are not both executed in the same way.

CRYSTAL CLEAR TONE (Treble Bleed)

• Retain clarity at lower volumes. To make your tone crystal clear at lower volumes we include an Obsidian® Custom spec treble bleed mod. This prevents tone 'muddiness' at low volumes by allowing high frequencies to pass along a separate path to your amp, rather than being stopped short by the increasing resistance at the volume control.

SMOOTH TONE CONTROL

• Selected models add a custom designed tone control using Obsidian Wire designed, CTS built IGNEOS™ pots for a smooth and useable tone control taper.

KILL SWITCH / MUTE SWITCH

• Forged and Rift models include a custom kill/mute switch wired directly into the main PCB to get great stutter effects and total silence when pressed.

COIL SPLIT

• Turn your humbucker in to a single coil, and back again. Our coil splits are custom designed to get a truly usable second voice from our pickups.
